Dispose of Grease Properly

Grease in Drains = Sewer Blockages & High Costs
The City of Bathurst Wastewater Treatment team is facing a significant rise in grease-related issues. This surge is leading to serious sewer blockages and costly problems at our Wastewater Treatment Plant.
When fats, oils, and grease are poured down drains, they can:
• Block sewer lines, causing backups, property damage, and raw sewage overflows
• Disrupt treatment processes, driving up maintenance and operational costs for everyone
While all residents should be mindful at home, restaurants and food service establishments have the biggest impact due to the high volume of grease and oil used in commercial kitchens.
To protect our infrastructure, City staff may conduct random site visits to support compliance with the Water & Sewer By-Law (2024-01).
What restaurants can do:
• Use and maintain grease traps properly
• Store used oil in designated containers
• Never rinse grease down sinks or floor drains
• Train staff on proper disposal methods
By changing habits and working together, we can prevent costly blockages and keep Bathurst’s sewer system running smoothly.
