IMPORTANT NOTICE – REDUCTION OF WATER USAGE WITHIN THE CITY OF BATHURST

Due to the ongoing extreme heat and lack of rainfall this summer, water levels in Middle River and Carters Brook are presently very low. The City is taking preemptive measures and is urging all residents connected to the municipal water system to reduce water consumption to a minimum.
This is necessary to prevent more severe restrictions or potential water shortages in the coming days.
Taking the following measures will help us reduce the pressure on our water supply:
- Refrain from washing vehicles, boats, trailers, or other recreational equipment.
- Refrain from filling swimming pools, wading pools, or hot tubs.
- Refrain from watering lawns, decorative gardens, or green spaces.
- Refrain from using water to wash driveways, sidewalks, or other paved surfaces.
- Keep showers as short as possible.
- Turn off taps when brushing teeth, shaving, or washing dishes.
- Use dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- If you must water vegetable, fruit, or herb gardens, do so early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation, and only use the amount of water that is absolutely necessary.
- Reuse clean household water where possible (e.g., cooled cooking water for plants).
Why This Matters
Extreme heat accelerates evaporation, placing strain on water reserves. Without immediate action, the City could face mandatory water rationing or service interruptions. By acting now, we can help ensure there is enough water for essential needs such as drinking, sanitation, and firefighting.
Your cooperation is vital. Every litre saved today helps protect our community’s water supply.
