Bathurst to offer new “fat bike” rental service

  February 24, 2017

Bathurst, Tuesday February 21 2017 – The City of Bathurst has acquired a fleet of ten “fat bikes” and is now offering a rental service from the KC Irving Regional Centre.    The acquisition of both bikes and helmets were made in partnership with two local businesses – Centre Du Cyclisme & Sport, and Nepisiguit River Company.      Fat biking is an up and coming winter activity that allows users to cycle on a year round basis. Unlike a traditional bike, fat bikes have tires that are substantially wider (10 to 13 cm, or 4 to 5 inches) that provide more floatation and traction on variable surfaces such as sand and snow.   “We are very fortunate to have such a great trail network in the city, and this new service will help us make better use of them during the winter months. Fat biking is a relatively new activity and by acquiring these bikes and offering a rental service, we believe that we will be able to grow the sport and further position ourselves as a four season recreational hub”, said Ryan Wilbur, Recreation Programmer for Bathurst’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department.   The primary objectives of the fat bike rental initiative are to promote active living and further expand the use of the City’s trail system to an all-season concept.   A dedicated trail of approximately 6 kilometres will be groomed and maintained in the area behind the KC Irving Regional Centre. For this year, maintenance will rely primarily on a few volunteers whom have committed to support this project. However, the city hopes to have a more permanent approach in place for next winter.   Rental fees will be very affordable at only $30 for half day use and $50 for full days. Reservations must be made in advance and can be done through the Parks, Recreation and Tourism office located at the KC Irving Regional Centre.   For information or to make a reservation, contact The City of Bathurst’s Parks, Recreation, and Tourism office at 548-0410,
