The phrase “as tough as nails” is a true description of Darryl Knowles. Although he never played any organized minor hockey, only pond hockey in Clifton, NB, Darryl began his career as a standout with the Bathurst Juveniles, a team that captured the Maritime Juvenile Championship. Darryl then went on to play Junior Hockey in Peterborough and Brantford, eventually turning pro and spending the season with the Syracuse Blazers of the North American Hockey League. The Blazers captured the 1973-74 Lockhart Cup, with Darryl contributing 17 goals and 32 assists that year. After playing more pro hockey in Tuscon, Arizona, he returned to Bathurst and played with the Campbellton Tigers, winning a National Championship. He was also successful in his coaching career with the then Alpines, winning the North Shore Senior Hockey League Championship in 1981-82 and taking them to the Provincial league final in 1984-85.
