Hydrants

Maintenance

For your safety, snow and debris covering hydrants should be removed. The area around the hydrant should also be clean for easier access. Fire Services recommends a clearing of one meter (3ft.) all around the hydrant with a path to the street to ensure firefighters have quick access.

Adopt-a-Hydrant

If there is a fire hydrant near your home, you can help the Bathurst Fire Department by keeping it clear of ice and snow.

Adopt a hydrant by agreeing to do the items below:

  • Clear a path from the hydrant to the street;
  • Clear a 3-foot perimeter around the hydrant;
  • Remove ice and snow

Hydrant Flushing

This process takes place each year as it is vital to the general maintenance of the City’s water distribution system. Flushing hydrants maintains the integrity of the water system, removes sediments from water mains, verifies the proper operation of hydrants and valves, and maintains fire fighting capabilities.

Hydrant flushing may cause a drop in water pressure or make the water discoloured for a short period of time. Once the flushing has finished, residents are advised to run COLD WATER TAPS ONLY until it is clear again.

Please do not use your hot water until you have clear running water.
