Fire Hydrant Maintenance

Hydrant Flushing

This process takes place each year as it is vital to the general maintenance of the City’s water distribution system. Flushing hydrants maintains the integrity of the water system, removes sediments from water mains, verifies the proper operation of hydrants and valves, and maintains fire fighting capabilities.

Hydrant flushing may cause a drop in water pressure or make the water discoloured for a short period of time. Once the flushing has finished, residents are advised to run COLD WATER TAPS ONLY until it is clear again.

Concerning clothes washing (especially for whites): as the situation issue is sporadic, residents are asked to run their water first and verify if the water is clear. If the water is dirty, please refrain from doing the wash until the water clears.

Please do not use your hot water until you have clear running water.

If there is a fire hydrant near your home, you can help the Bathurst Fire Department by keeping it clear of ice and snow

Adopt a hydrant by agreeing to do the following items:

  • Clear a path from the hydrant to the street;
  • Clear a 3-foot perimeter around the hydrant;
  • Remove ice and snow
