June 14th, 2017
The Canada Games flag relay will arrive in Bathurst on Tuesday June 20th as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games, Canada’s largest multi-sport and cultural event for youth.
As a Canada 150 Signature project, a unique 50th anniversary Canada Games flag is travelling across Canada celebrating each of the past Host Communities. Its ultimate destination will be the Opening Ceremony of the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg on July 28th.
The Community Celebration will begin with a flag raising ceremony at 12:00pm at Bathurst’s City Hall, followed by the unveiling of the Canada Games exhibit featuring history and memorabilia from the 50 years of the Canada Games. Welipuk and Ninu, the 2003 Bathurst-Campbellton Canada Winter Games mascots will also be part of the celebration. The first 100 in attendance will receive free Canada games memorabilia and all participants will have their names placed in draws to win 50th anniversary Canada Games Scarves and t-shirts.
“The collaborative work of Bathurst, Campbellton and twelve other municipalities who hosted events, along with the contributions of countless volunteers and partners, was such that The 2003 Canada Winter Games was a benchmark event for northern New Brunswick. It left a lasting legacy for athletes and the communities with new and enhanced sports facilities, volunteer and leadership development that have benefited athletes and the communities ever since. We are proud of this legacy”, said Bathurst Mayor Paolo Fongemie.
